What customers say

Based on genuine customer reviews

Northeast Surveyors and Engineers carries out structural surveys, structural reports and construction supervision for clients across Sunderland and the wider north east. Reviewers repeatedly highlight the depth of knowledge brought to building issues, from missing or incorrectly installed insulation and roof defects to water penetration around a chimney, with reports described as comprehensive and inspections thorough. Gary Boardman is named several times and is praised for being helpful, knowledgeable and willing to talk findings through, including in follow-up telephone appointments, while the team is described as responsive to queries and sensitive to the tight timescales of property negotiations and re-mortgage applications.

Clients value the efficiency of the service, with access arranged directly through estate agents and surveys completed even on a bank holiday, and note that advice has helped them avoid significant costs or withdraw from unsuitable purchases. Several customers mention returning for repeat instructions on further properties, including structural inspections and supervision of remedial construction work, which points to a level of trust built over multiple projects. The practice's work covers homebuyers' reports and building defect investigations, alongside the structural engineering and party wall matters that arise during flat sales and negotiations.

I commissioned NES&E for a standard domestic beam design. I'm an Incorporated Electrical Engineer myself so appreciate professional standards. Their engineer attended my property, took measurements, yet issued a drawing that simply does not reflect reality. Multiple structural elements were shown which do not exist in their stated location — an error visible from the very room they took the measurements from. When I challenged it, they amended part of the drawing but offered no apology for the lazy attempt at accuracy, instead, being rude. When I phoned to discuss it, I was told "this is as basic as it gets". Since it is as basic as it gets, a Chartered Structural Engineer should not issue drawings that contradict the physical building they've "inspected". A Chartered Structural Engineer should know the difference between a supporting wall and a stud wall, and not attempt a calculation based on an structure which is simply not there. Also, a professional firm should apologise when caught making such basic mistakes. NES&E did not. Therefore, I cannot recommend them. If they make such obvious mistakes on basic jobs, what will they do with complex arrangements? I would not trust them professionally. Edit: Rather than admit they made mistakes, they instead opt to double-down and make irrelevant and childish points against their own client - see their reply to this review. You don't have to be a structural engineer to know that a drawing does not match what is physically in front of you, and you especially don't have to be a structural engineer to know professionalism. My original review stands, and their reply only reinforces it.

We have recently used Northeast Surveyors and Engineers in response to some possible issues raised in a homebuyers' report during our flat sale. The service received was efficient and very helpful, with very prompt replied to queries and the engineer sensitive to our need for a prompt resolution to our negotiations. Would highly recommend to anyone who requires a structural report.

Gary recently came out to help find our issues causing the cold of our home. He found so much insulation not put in correctly and to the wrong spec by the builder. He was very knowledgeable, incredibly helpful and I wouldn’t hesitate to get in touch with him again about anything else.

Great experience with this organization. I first got their service in 2019 to do a structural survey of my rented property and then to supervise the construction work to address all the work recommended by them. The work was to my entire satisfaction. I used the company to inspect water penetration through the chimney and recommended work provided in a detailed report plus construction supervision beyond my expectations. Highly trustworthy and professional with generosity.

Very pleased I made contact with this company. Gary is very knowledgeable regarding the roof issues I have and has helped me to work through them, aiming to get to an acceptance of my property by a mortgage company for a re- mortgage. Would highly recommend to anyone needing advice and help with building circumstances and issues that need to be dealt with. Thanks Ne S & E
