Disappointing and time-consuming pre-instruction experience. I approached Whitefox Chartered Surveyors about an independent investigation into building defects, including render efflorescence and possible water ingress. A scheduled initial call was missed. After rearranging, I had further discussions, spent time speaking to the professional references Whitefox provided, and then confirmed that I was ready to proceed. Whitefox subsequently sent a detailed proposal and terms seeking a £3,000 payment on account. Before signing and paying, I asked for reasonable clarification of the proposed scope, client identity, insurance, authority to instruct third parties, fee controls, expenses, termination terms and the approach to the investigation. Whitefox then withdrew, saying it no longer had capacity because it had accepted work from existing clients. This came after several weeks of correspondence and after I had spent considerable time progressing the appointment in good faith. I appreciate firms can become busy, but capacity should have been confirmed before a prospective client is asked to undertake reference checks, progress a detailed instruction, receive contractual terms and prepare to pay money on account. The process was poorly managed and left me needing to start again with another surveyor. This review reflects my own pre-instruction experience; no survey work was ultimately undertaken.
